INTERACTIVE Act 48

Professional Development Workshops
at Prime Stage Theatre

The price is only $15 per workshop and you will receive three Act 48 hours for each workshop.

Who is leading the workshops?
Workshops are led by Prime Stage's Education Director, Deb Wein, and recently retired teacher Mimi Botkin (who has an impressive 37 years of public school teaching!), and local theatre artists who will introduce strategies to increase your students' comprehension and appreciation of text by bringing literature to life in relevant, meaningful and enjoyable ways.

What will they be like?
We invite you to dress casually as we explore literature in ACTIVE ways on the sets of "Of Mice and Men" and "The Outsiders." Both workshops feature a tour of the New Hazlett Theater so you can discover what Prime Stage does behind the scenes to "bring literature to life."

Refreshments will be served and materials will be supplied to help enrich your classroom experiences.

Workshop #1: Page to Stage and Back Again
Saturday, March 1, 2008
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m

With testing, curriculum demands and the interests of students, we face a variety of challenges when teaching a favorite or unfamiliar work of literature or text.

Why is it challenging?
The reasons could include:

1. You've done it many times and want a new approach.

2. You've never taught it before.

3. It isn't part of the curriculum.

4. Kids think it is a "groaner."

This workshop is designed to address YOUR needs. So we invite you to bring excerpts from your favorite book, or one that is a challenge to teach. Let us know what those challenges are when you register for the workshop. Just drop us a note on the back of your registration form and be as specific as possible as to why you chose that particular piece of literature.

Workshop #2: Connecting Kids to Literature
Saturday, May 10, 2008
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m

"Why should I care about this story? What does it mean to me?" As literature and texts become more complex, students seek visual cues and clues that show connections between an author's life, vocabulary, the time period, and today.

This interactive, research-based workshop presents strategies that will take you and your students to a higher level of comprehension and appreciation by connecting texts to the world of your students. The goal is to hear your students say "I never knew there was so much in here I could actually understand and enjoy."

Where are the workshops?
Both workshops will be held at the beautiful New Hazlett Theater on Pittsburgh's North Side, 6 Allegheny Square East, Pittsburgh, PA, 15212.

Cost is only $15 per workshop.

We look forward to seeing you at one or both of the workshops!
