A
Very “Inspiring Teacher” Indeed!
On
Friday, February 26, 2010, Prime
Stage Theatre was honored to present
the First Annual “Inspiring Teachers
Inspiring Readers” award to Dr.
Deborah Van Maele of Hampton Middle
School at a ceremony and award reception
held at the New Hazlett Theatre.
Despite
snowy weather and poor road conditions,
about 30 people came to the event
to show their support for Dr. Van
Maele’s work in advancing adolescent
literacy. William Isler of the Pittsburgh
Public School Board spoke briefly
about the importance of highlighting
the success stories in education
like Dr. Van Maele. Two of Dr. Van
Maele’s students were also in attendance
and read portions of their heartfelt
nomination letters to the audience.
Lastly, the award was presented
to Dr. Van Maele. She received a
plaque, an autographed copy of the
book You Gotta BE the Book
by Jeffrey Wilhelm, a one-year membership
to the Assembly on Literature for
Adolescents Network, and two season
tickets for Prime Stages Theatre’s
2010-2011 season.
Dr.
Van Maele then addressed the audience
about the need for more awareness
of adolescent literacy which so
often becomes overshadowed by children’s
literacy and adult literacy. She
also brought the audience to tears
with a very moving story about a
former student who, five years after
he moved to a different state, called
her to say that he had graduated
from high school thanks to her belief
in him and his abilities. Truly
inspiring indeed!
