Teacher curriculum letter

Dear Teachers,

The Education Team of Prime Stage Theatre thanks you for helping us bring literature to life through theatre experiences in the classroom and at the theatre.

Our team is comprised of teachers and drama specialists who are committed to developing curriculum support for this year's productions. In brainstorming the activities, we considered a number of factors.

What would we, as teachers, want to have for our students in the way of activities and curriculum support? What would make the activities easy to implement and the curriculum meaningful so the literature becomes relevant and enjoyable for all your students, including reluctant readers?

Our goal is to design support materials that address the at-risk child, i.e., the struggler, and the gifted child, as well as the student who falls midway on the continuum. Additionally, we "get down to basics" with vocabulary lists (definitions provided). For your convenience, we have included a parent letter that can be sent home the day of the performance. This letter encourages parent-child interaction and makes the theatrical experience more meaningful for the student.

By addressing different learning styles, and connecting the activities to applicable Standards and Assessment anchors, you can justify and document the activities' adherence to state requirements. But more importantly, the activities will create the kind of literary experiences Louise Rosenblatt (1976) encouraged where students evoke personal meaning from the literature, thereby becoming actively engaged in the transactional process of reading. Please feel free to reproduce any of these curriculum materials.

Prime Stage brings literature to life for you and your students. We want each production, each performance, each experience to help you motivate your students to read and delve into the many worlds of literature. Please write or call us with any suggestions or comments we can share with others. You can also visit our Forum and post a topic.

It is our pleasure to work with you. We hope to be a resource, support your efforts, and provide unparalleled service in your endeavors to teach your students and help them reach their full potential.

Let us hear from you,

Cindy West,
Education Director
